Danville local schools will begin to provide instruction on student interactions with peace officers as part of a required course for graduation. All incoming freshmen for the first time after July of 2022 will be required to take the class as a mandate; however, we believe providing the curriculum electively to all the high school grades this year will be highly beneficial. The Ohio Department of Education has released a draft curriculum covering topics that include types of law enforcement officers, their duties, scenarios where students may interact with police, students’ constitutional rights, what information and documents students must provide during stops, and how they should behave while interacting with the police during those encounters.
The goal is to partner with our local Law Enforcement agency, stakeholders, educators, community members, and the SRO to strategically create and implement this curriculum so it has a positive impact on students and that does not eliminate other important topics needing to be taught.
SRO; Captain Rich Miller, said this stems from Senate Bill 68 and obviously makes good sense for students to know their constitutional rights and how to apply them situationally. In this 21st century of policing, we must be youth-focused and incorporate pillars based on building trust and legitimacy.
