On Monday, May 11, 2026, Samuel Lyons received the John Philip Sousa Award at the Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon. The award was presented by Danville band director Drew Koziel as part of the Knox County Schools district’s annual recognition of one outstanding band student from each school. This honor represents one of the highest distinctions a high school musician can achieve.
Established in 1955, the John Philip Sousa Band Award recognizes exceptional musicianship, leadership, and dedication among high school band students. Created with the approval of Helen Sousa Albert and Priscilla Sousa, daughters of renowned composer and bandmaster John Philip Sousa, the award has become a nationally recognized symbol of excellence in music education. Recipients are selected based on their commitment to their school’s band program as well as their exemplary musical achievements.
In addition to receiving the award, directors have the opportunity to submit recipients’ names to the official online national registry. This registry serves as a permanent record of student achievement and may be viewed by family members, peers, educators, and college admissions representatives. According to The Instrumentalist Awards website, the registry highlights students whose accomplishments reflect the highest standards of musical performance and dedication.
